A blue enamel platter has disappeared from a Cape Town braai. Pierre admits to being at the table, but describes the boerewors roll in his wing as a complimentary welcome snack. His reservation is written on a napkin. In his own handwriting.
Evidence bagThe napkin says TABLE FOR ONE. Underneath, in smaller writing: bring the large platter.

Crumb Cascade
The buffet · material witness
An extremely moving buffet.
“Nothing fell. The food was relocating.” — Pierre
Read the statement
The same blue platter is missing, and the buffet has acquired a rather conspicuous gap. A trail of crumbs runs from the serving table towards the terrace. Pierre calls it an innovative table arrangement. The kitchen calls it six missing lunches.
Evidence bagA blue enamel chip sits beside the serving tongs. Someone has tried to label it “seasoning”.
A blue braai platter is missing. The waiter has gathered the silver covers and is conducting what he insists is a routine inspection. Pierre has requested that all searches be postponed until after dessert. The waiter has declined.
Evidence bagThe table plan contains one extra guest: “P. Igeon”. No one remembers approving the booking.
“That is my signature. The other seven are recommendations.” — Pierre
Read the statement
The missing blue platter was listed on the braai menu. A copy has turned up covered in notes: extra boerewors, another milk tart, charge it to the waiter. Several dishes are circled. Every circle is suspiciously beak-shaped.
Evidence bagUnder the specials, a handwritten instruction reads: “Delivery entrance: whichever window is open.”

Food Drop
The kitchen pass · scene of a small disturbance
Gravity was an accomplice.
“An unfortunate accident. Shall we try another?” — Pierre
Read the statement
A blue braai platter is missing from the table. At the kitchen pass, a koeksister has taken an elaborate route to a waiting plate. Pierre claims he was demonstrating gravity. The kitchen would like him to demonstrate leaving.
Evidence bagA sketch of the kitchen pass has a dotted line labelled “quality control” ending at Pierre’s seat.

Under the Cloche
The covered dishes · declining to comment
Three covers. Six excuses.
“Could we agree that finding lunch is technically a public service?” — Pierre
Read the statement
The blue platter has disappeared, and three covered dishes have arrived with no order attached. The waiter suspects a diversion. Pierre suspects lunch. Neither is prepared to leave the table until the matter has been thoroughly examined.
Evidence bagThe order slip is addressed to “The investigating committee”. Every committee member is a pigeon.

CASE CLOSED · BADGE COLLECTED
The kitchen would like a word.
The platter is back. Empty. Underneath it is a review: “Excellent portions. Confusing payment policy.” The waiter has filed this under confession.
